MBDSA: Moscow Bilingual Deaf School Association. MBDSA was started by Michael Pursglove in 1994. The objective of MBDSA is to support the bilingual school for Deaf children in Moscow. The bilingual Deaf school is the only Deaf school in Russia where Sign Language has equal status with the written/spoken language. Independent of the state system, the school has been supported by MBDSA since its foundation.

(2006, September 1). Russian Sign Language for Families and their Deaf Children. This project will extend and develop the provision made for introducing Russian Sign Language to young deaf children and their families in Moscow and, linked to this, provide experience for two young deaf women training to be teachers of the deaf. Currently the Centre for Deaf Studies introduces RSL within a kindergarten setting. Proposed developments include a home based programme, a residential course for families and deaf children, and a toy library for families of deaf children in the Moscow area. The trainee teachers of the deaf will, under supervision, assist in these developments.
(2005, May 1). Assistance. Nordis School has been funded to provide support to young deaf people studying in integrated schools in Nizhegorodsky region. Nordis have successfully lobbied the government to allow young deaf people access to integrated education and this project aims to provide a model of the psychological, social and educational support that deaf children studying in the mainstream need.

Signs of Russia. In 1991 a bilingual school for deaf children was set up in Moscow. The school was enthusiastic about extending this approach to young deaf children but hadn't the funds to do so. In May 1995 therefore 'Signs of Russia' was set up in the UK to support the development of the Moscow Bilingual Nursery for deaf children aged 2 - 7 years. The nursery opened in October 1995 and Signs of Russia became a registered charitable trust in August 1996.
Zaitseva, G, Pursglove, M & Gregory S. Vygotsky, sign language, and the education of deaf pupils. This article considers the impact of Vygotsky on the education of deaf children in Russia and is a translation/adaptation of an article currently being published in Defektologiia. While Vygotsky perceived sign language as limited in some aspects nevertheless, he always considered that it had a role in education of deaf pupils. He believed that sign language should not be 'treated like an the enemy' and said that 'bilingualism of deaf people is an objective reality'.

Русская линия / Библиотека периодической печати / Красноречиво руки говорят. Школу-интернат N1 для глухих детей, которой 15 декабря исполнилось 199 лет, называют колыбелью российской сурдопедагогики. А дело было так… однажды императрица Мария Федоровна, супруга Павла I, прогуливалась в парке, навстречу ей шла фрейлина, племянники которой, общаясь меж собой, жестикулировали. На следующий день императрица разыскала фрейлину: "Я всю ночь не спала, все думала о ваших племянниках" и предложила послать их учиться за границу, где были школы для глухонемых. Но родные не захотели расстаться с детьми. Тогда императрица приняла решение открыть такую школу в России.
Центр образования. глухих и жестового языка был официально зарегистрирован в 1998 году, но фактически начал свою работу еще в 1992 году с открытием первой в России Московской билингвистической гимназии для глухих детей. Наш Центр сотрудничает с Московским городским педагогическим университетом, педагогическим педколледжем № 4 г. Москвы, школой-интернатом для глухих детей № 65 г.

Mumu. Film (1961) USSR, 71 min, drama. A man born deaf and speaking impaired is sent from his village to work as a keeper at a town estate. The move upsets him until he find romance with a washerwoman. To his consternation their employer makes her marry someone else. The man takes solace in looking after a puppy which is the runt of the litter. He calls the dog, Mumu, and soon it is lively and healthy. But when it snaps at his employer she tells him to get rid of it. He throws the dog in a river and sets off for his home village.
Mute witness. Film (1995) Germany / UK / Russian, 90 min, thriller. A mix of Russian and English dialogue. A speaking impaired special effects artist is witness to a filmed murder (a snuff movie)... Best treated as a farce... The attitude to Billy's deafness while exploitative does show some understanding which is really lost in a film as dire as this one.
Strana gluchich (Country of the deaf.) Catya writes: Haven't seen this one, but it's been screened at the 2nd British Deaf Film & TV Festival (in 1993, I think). As I understand, the audience hated it. A young deaf dancer gives refuge to another woman whose boyfriend is in debt to the Russian mafia. She wants the woman to leave her boyfriend and go off with her to a better (Utopian) life.

(2004, November 26). Rukhledev receives prestigious award. Valery Rukhledev, President of both Russian Association of the Deaf and Russian Sport Union of the Deaf, recently became the newest recipient of the prestigious award - Medal of Peter the Great. The Russian Federation's Academy on Issues of Security, Defense, Law and Order presented this award to Mr. Rukhledev in a special ceremony.
(2004, November 19). Uncommon senses. Setting a film in a home for the blind, deaf and dumb might sound like a recipe for yet another bleak, moralizing post-Soviet film, but Roman Balayan's "Bright is the Night" is an exception to the rule. Social commentary is simply not something the veteran Armenian-born, Ukrainian-based director does. If anything, "Bright is the Night" resembles his costumed 1995 adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's "First Love," with its lush pastoral setting and atmosphere of slow but unoppressive decay, and its understated treatment of the emotions that connect a small number of characters in close proximity. It's summer, and the majority of residents are away from the institution, leaving just a handful of staff and patients on the premises.

"She used to be unable to do anything," said Natalya Shaboyan, the teaching assistant in charge of Yana and her three classmates at the Sergiyev Posad School for the Deaf and Blind, the world's largest boarding school of its kind. "You don't know how happy we were when she learned to dress herself, eat by herself or make gestures to communicate with us. She is such a sensitive girl."

Obituary: Galina Lazarevna Zaitseva, October 12, 1934–August 6, 2005. Galina Zaitseva was a respected academic, a sign language researcher, and a qualified teacher of the deaf. Her sudden death came as a shock to colleagues and friends. While it was known she was ill, she was fully expected to recover, and a month before her death, she was planning her next book on Russian Sign Language (RSL).

Межрегиональный турнир «Оранжевый шар-2008» в очередной раз пройдет в сентябре в рамках акции местного отделения Всероссийского общества глухих «Котласская неделя глухих», которая посвящается Международному Дню глухого человека.
Глухие борцы соберутся в Москве на свой чемпионат мира. 12-й чемпионат мира по восточным единоборствам среди глухих спортсменов пройдет в Москве с 20 по 23 мая этого года. Как сообщил "Интерфаксу" источник в городской администрации, соревнования среди глухих спортсменов будут проводиться по четырем видам: дзюдо, ушу, каратэ-до и тхэквондо в помещении спортивного комплекса Российского государственного университета физической культуры.

Zaurov, M. Moscow: Is there any Deaf Jewish Identity in Russia? Editor’s note: Mark Zaurov is a German graduate student (MA) at Hamburg University. He is majoring in Deaf Studies (Sign Language, Linguistic and Sociolinguistics, and Culture of the Deaf Community) and minors in History and Education. The education system is different in Germany than it is in the United States. Mark was born in Moscow and emigrated with his parents and deaf sister to Israel at the age of 3.
