The effects of religion, population sub-division and geography on the prevalence of deaf-mutism were investigated using information collected in the 1921 Census of Punjab. The total sample size was 9·36 million, and comprised data on thirteen Hindu castes, seventeen Muslim biraderis and two Sikh castes. By comparison, the lower level of inter-biraderi variation among Muslims is probably indicative of the dissolution of pre-existing caste boundaries and the resultant gene pool mixing that followed the large-scale conversion of Hindus to Islam during Muslim rule in North India from the 13th to the 19th centuries.

DeafTODAY. (2005, January 2). Egyptian charity teaches Qur'an in Sign Language. An Egyptian charity has championed the initiative and started a sign-language program to teach the deaf-mutes the meanings of the Noble Qur'an. With the number of Egyptian deaf-mutes reportedly hitting six million, the Cairo-based Risala (Arabic for message) felt it incumbent upon itself to launch the one-of-a-kind program.
(2003, May 24). Hearing-Impaired Listen to Friday Sermon in Sign Language. Yesterday was a historic day for the Kilic Ali Pasa mosque in Tophane, Istanbul. For the first time in their lives, 20 hearing-impaired members of the congregation understood every word of the Imam's Friday sermon, which was translated into sign language. Before addressing the congregation, Imam Halil Neciboglu welcomed and thanked the 'very special guests'.

Effatha, an institution where deaf children learn sign language (among other things), took the initiative to develop the Islamic signs.
